On Friday, 17 October, the H2MAT+ project was presented at the 6th Basque Hydrogen Corridor T&D and Storage Meeting held at the EIC – Energy Intelligence Centre.
Gurutze Arruebarrena, a researcher at Mondragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa, shared the latest advances and results of the project with the 35 attendees at the event. H2MAT+ seeks to develop knowledge, capabilities and robust methodologies for the production and characterisation of metallic materials for use in contact with hydrogen.
During the meeting, the consortium’s capabilities for conducting absorption and permeation tests on these materials, as well as ex-situ and in-situ mechanical tests, were presented. Gurutze also shared the results obtained so far in these experiments.
In addition, attendees were able to learn about the different material hybridization techniques developed in the project to achieve metal structures that are viable for use in environments with extreme hydrogen conditions: Diffusion Bonding, Centrifugal Casting and Near Solidus Forming (NSF).
Finally, Gurutze presented the future challenges of the project, which include achieving a greater understanding of hydrogen absorption, diffusion and fracture mechanisms. Research is also planned into the behaviour of welds in the presence of hydrogen and coatings that can mitigate corrosion.
